Dean to provide budget update at three events
Interim Dean Christopher Ober will provide an update on college activities and a discussion of the budget situation to the Engineering community at three upcoming events. All three will be held in McManus Lounge (166 Hollister Hall). Faculty members are encouraged to attend the Engineering faculty meeting on Monday, December 21, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Two forums are scheduled for staff members: Monday, November 30, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., and Friday, December 4, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Staff members are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions. Provost plans public discussions on task force reports
Starting today, Cornell Provost Kent Fuchs will moderate six public discussions on strategic plan task force reports that recommend ways the university could restructure yet strengthen its activities and balance its budget. Summaries are posted online, and full reports are available for reading only in the Office of the Dean of Faculty, 315 Day Hall. The discussions and their focuses are:

Professor Emeritus John Abel, CEE, was elected to a second term as president of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS). The election was held at the October 28 meeting of the IASS Executive Committee during the 50th Anniversary Symposium of the Association that took place in Valencia, Spain. Skyler Schneider, a senior in ECE, has recently been chosen the 2008–2009 winner of the Douglas Whitney ’61 Award for excellence in writing in an Engineering Communications course. Schneider won the $1500 award for his final report, titled Implementing Detection of Tamper-Resistant Kernel Rootkits. The paper was described by Whitney, who participates in the selection each year, as "truly excellent." Thanksgiving schedule announced for Mattin's Cafe
Mattin's Cafe in the Duffield Atrium will close early, at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, November 25, for the Thanksgiving Break and will remain closed until Monday, November 30. Complete a survey for a chance to win dinner for two
Want to help out a group of Cornell Hotel School students who are conducting research for a course project? They are distributing a survey to select groups at Cornell. Engineering graduate students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate. The survey should only take about 5 minutes to complete. A listing of upcoming guest speakers and seminars is now offered on the Engineering Web site. As a result, Information Update will no longer carry listings of colloquia and seminars. Staff members who regularly submit seminar information to Information Update are encouraged to post their events on the University Events calendar instead. When entering your events into the university calendar, please tag them with the Engineering “flag” in order for them to be posted via RSS feed on the Engineering seminars page. Submitting announcements to Information Update Please send your news notes to engr_info_update@cornell.edu. Announcements will be published no more than twice and should be limited to about a hundred words or less. The next issue of Information Update, published biweekly during the academic year and monthly in the summer, will be December 2, 2009. The deadline for submissions to this next issue is Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at 5 p.m. Information received after the deadline will be published in a future issue if appropriate.
