Degree Programs
The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering is an international leader in providing innovative educational and research programs in the areas of biological engineering, environmental engineering and production engineering for bio-based products. These programs focus on the three great challenges facing humanity in the 21st century: (1) Developing engineering systems that monitor, replace, or intervene in the function and operation of living organisms; (2) Protecting and remediating the world's natural resources, including water, soil, air, energy, and biodiversity; (3) Ensuring an adequate and safe food supply in an era of expanding world population.
Our undergraduate program has a unique focus on biological systems, including the environment, which is realized through a combination of fundamental engineering sciences, biology, engineering analysis and design, and liberal studies. The research program is interdisciplinary and deals with a range of topics at the intersection of engineering and biology, including microbial and enzymatic processing, water quality, gene transfer, food production, and animal health. Technology transfer programs interface with private industry, government agencies, and the public.
Career opportunities cover a broad spectrum of private industry, public agencies, educational institutions, and graduate programs in engineering, science, medicine, law, and other fields. In recent years, graduates have developed careers in environmental consulting, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, biomedical engineering, management consulting, and international development. Two career development seminars are offered to educate students on the wide range of opportunities and how to prepare for them.
