Administration & Contact Information Operations Research and Information Engineering is the science of rational decision making and the study, design and integration of complex situations and systems with the goal of predicting system behavior and improving or optimizing system performance. It encompasses managerial decision making, mathematical and computer modeling and the use of information technology for informed decision-making. Graduates of Cornell’s School of Operations Research and Information Engineering work for companies that specialize in manufacturing, logistics, supply chain management, consulting, financial services, information technologies, or transportation as well as universities and industrial or governmental research groups. Operations Research professionals may be theoreticians or practitioners and work in academia, industry, public service. Graduates may teach, do research, consult, advise on risk control, analyze data, explode myths, implement models, make decisions. Some ORIE graduates who work in industry remain in technical analyst positions and some move into managerial roles. The undergraduate program provides majors with the technical tools necessary for fact-based managerial decision-making. The MEng program emphasizes the practice of operations research and prepares students for professional careers in industry and government. Emphasis in the MS/PhD programs is on OR as a mathematical science, providing the student with a strong analytical basis for advanced research in the theory and methodology of OR, as well as innovative approaches to applications.
