If you are applying for a deferral of admission, there are several critical factors that you should be aware of as you enter this process. We suggest that you print this Web page and note the following information as it will help guide you as you apply for a deferral of admission from the College of Engineering.
If you've been admitted to Cornell's College of Engineering, it is possible to apply for deferred entry. The Engineering Admissions Office processes deferral requests on a case-by-case basis. Recent examples of reasons for admissions deferral requests included military service obligations and religious and research opportunities.
The College of Engineering rarely grants deferrals based upon financial aid circumstances. If you are an international student, and you are not a Canadian or Mexican citizen, the opportunity to attain financial aid from Cornell is limited. This circumstance does not change from year to year and, as a result, deferring your entry will not enhance your chances of attaining financial aid from Cornell in a subsequent year.
If you apply for a deferral, and it is granted, the following three conditions apply:
A. You must decline admissions offer at all other colleges and universities to which you have been admitted at time of deferral request
B. You must submit the $400 deposit, reserving your place in a future entering class of Cornell engineering students (NOTE: If you are requesting a 2 year deferral you must submit an $800 deposit)
C. You must NOT apply to or enroll at another college or university during your deferral year
The guidelines are slightly different for military deferrals.
If you are granted a deferral of admission you will receive a packet of information entitled "Cornell Bound" in the spring prior to entering Cornell. This packet of information contains: Medical Forms, Housing and Dining Options/Applications, Identity Card, Billing Processes, and Transportation Forms.
