Request a Tutor
Engineering students may receive up to two hours of free tutoring each week through the Tutors-on-Call program. Before requesting a tutor, please read the following related policies:
-
Complete the on-line Tutor Request Form or stop by the Engineering Learning Initiatives office in 167 Olin Hall and submit a paper copy.
-
Once you have filled out a Tutor Request Form, ELI will provide you with the names of tutors for the requested course. If you have submitted the request electronically, you will receive a list of available tutors no later than the next business day. It is up to you to then contact the tutor(s) and make arrangements for your meeting. In your e-mail, be sure to indicate the course you are having difficulty with as well as when you are available to meet.
-
The tutor will respond to your request within 48 hours. On the rare occasion when you do not hear from a tutor within 48 hours, please notify the ELI office.
-
If you would like additional assistance in the same course during the semester, you will not need to complete another Tutor Request Form. However, if you require tutoring for a different course, you will need to submit an additional request.
You may meet with a tutor to get help with one assignment, or you may meet regularly throughout the semester. Keep in mind, though, that peer tutors are students just like you, and because of conflicting schedules, not every tutor will be able to accommodate your request. To increase the likelihood of meeting more quickly with a tutor, we recommend contacting several individuals at once.
In addition, tutors are likely to be busy during the same times as you, particularly around prelims and finals. Thus, it is important that you make a request and schedule a tutoring session far enough in advance to accommodate both your and your tutor's schedules.
Please note: Requests for tutors during finals will not be accepted, and there is no guarantee of tutor availability during Reading Week.
Complete the on-line Tutor Request Form now.
During the Tutoring Session
The goal of one-to-one peer tutoring is to promote the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. To that end, please do not expect the tutor to sit with you while you do your homework. This should be completed in advance so that your time may be spent addressing what you don't understand.
While tutors will not provide the answers to homework problems, they will provide examples that will help you understand the process of finding a solution. At the end of your tutoring session, you and your tutor will review what you have covered, clarify any remaining questions, and arrange for another meeting if desired.
