As part of their participation in ENGRG 150, all first-year students are assigned peer advisors—sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have volunteered to help new students understand the course selection process, meet other engineering students, and adjust to life at Cornell. Incoming first-year students meet their peer advisors during orientation week and as part of the ENGRG 150 seminar. During the first week of school, peer advisors are instrumental in helping first-year students negotiate the registration process and in answering the many questions that arise about dorm life, extracurricular activities, etc. Peer advisors also volunteer to help in a variety of ways in the ENGRG 150 program throughout the fall semester. They are able to offer first-year students useful information about courses, tips on studying, student activities, organizations, and other need-to-know facts about campus life from a student’s point of view. This perspective goes a long way in establishing a strong connection with the first-year students. The role of the peer advisor can have a significant effect on the life of a first-year Engineering student!
