Professor Lang Tong and former students Weisi Deng and Yuting Ji received the Best Paper Award for Energy Systems at the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Science held January 4-7, 2017 in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii.
In a paper titled "Probabilistic Forecasting and Simulation of Electricity Markets via Online Dictionary Learning," Professor Tong's group tackles the problem of forecasting operation conditions of large power systems with high levels of penetration of renewable energy such as solar and wind. Using machine learning techniques, they are able to reduce the computation cost by several orders of magnitude. Their algorithm provides a new security assessment and visualization tool for system operators to evaluate future operating conditions.
