January 17th, 2011 - MTEI Teaching Workshop Led by Prof. Michael Prince

Prince is a professor of Chemical Engineering at  Bucknell University, a Co-Director of the  National Effective Teaching Institute with Felder and Brent, and the author of frequently cited papers on active learning and student misconceptions.

Uncovering and Repairing Student Misconceptions 9:00am-10:00am (Olin Hall 245) An extensive research base demonstrates that students frequently enter our classrooms with significant misconceptions about core topics related to course content and leave with those misconceptions unchanged.  Since a deep conceptual understanding is both a defining element of expertise and a prerequisite for being able to apply what is learned in class to real world settings, failure to repair student misconceptions is a critical educational issue.  The discussion will introduce some of the research illustrating the problem and discuss proven techniques for promoting conceptual changes.

Does Student Engagement Really Work? 11:00pm - 12:00pm (Olin Hall 255) Research shows active learning engages students and increases their learning.  But is it worth adopting? This talk addresses issues such as: What is active learning anyways? How much time does it take to create activities? Can active learning really be added to a course while still covering the syllabus? What are some of the challenges and rewards of trying active learning?

Lunch with Michael Prince 12:15pm - 1:15pm (Olin Hall 128)

Making the Transition to Active Learning 1:30pm - 4:00pm (Olin Hall 245) This is a practical, hands-on workshop for faculty who are interested in increasing their use of active learning in the classroom. The workshop will introduce a range of active learning approaches, from short, informal class activities to more structured formats such as collaborative and problem-based learning. Leave the workshop with a clear understanding of the differences among these approaches and when it makes sense to use each one. Participants will be given the time to develop activities for a course that they plan to teach.

Co-sponsored by the Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute and the Cornell Center for Teaching Excellence.
