Admissions for Ph.D. Students

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. degree program is research-focused, with an emphasis on flexibility and individually tailored original research. Research activities at Cornell Engineering are supported by nearly forty interdisciplinary research centers, institutes, and programs, and the world-class facilities associated with them. Most graduate students spend about five years (beyond their undergraduate work) to earn a Ph.D.

In the Ph.D. program, students shape their course of study working within an academic framework developed with a Special Committee of faculty advisors chosen by the student (and including in some fields, a field-appointed member). The Ph.D. is offered by sixteen engineering-related graduate fields. Doctoral programs are typically completed in four to five years.
