Assistant Professor Zhiting Tian of the Sibley School was elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
ASME is a not-for-profit membership organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, toward a goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods.
Tian has made outstanding contributions in the area of nanoscale thermal transport and energy conversion with a particular focus on phonon transport. Specific contributions include understanding thermal transport in crystalline solids using synchrotron sources, leading polymer-based tunable thermal materials, advancing thermoelectric materials and devices, pioneering first-principles calculations of phonon transport, and developing atomistic Green’s function for thermal transport across interfaces.
“As a mechanical engineer, ASME is my home society. I am very honored to be named an ASME fellow. I hope to bring more research excitement and continue serving the community the best I can,” said Professor Tian.
Zhiting Tian received her B.E. in Engineering Physics from Tsinghua University, her M.S. from Binghamton University and her Ph.D. from MIT, both in Mechanical Engineering. She has many notable awards during the course of her career including an NSF CAREER Award, Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award and ACS Petroleum Research Fund Doctoral New Investigator Award. She has also received multiple awards from Virginia Tech, where she was an Assistant Professor before joining the Sibley School in 2018.
