Description

Rock you like a megadrought

This informal talk will cover the Fulbright opportunities, research, and experiences of the sabbatical year I spent in Stockholm, Sweden. It will focus on recent progress that our research group has made towards understanding the relationship between interannual ENSO variability and the decadal to multi-dedacal hydroclimate variations linked to megadrought using CMIP5 and CMIP6 era global climate models. We advance the hypothesis that biases in climate model ENSO spectra affect prolonged drought risk statistics in the western US and likely other parts of the world as well. New experimental tools (based on those widely used in the pop music industry) for bias correcting spectral discrepancies between models and observations are also discussed.
